The Marquette men's basketball team begins its second season under head coach Shaka Smart against Radford on Monday at Fiserv Forum.

"We've really, really emphasized taking on a defensive identity," Smart said Friday. "I thought early in the year last year we were up and down defensively, particularly in our first couple games at home. You think back to SIU-Edwardsville, New Hampshire, those were really close games because defensively we were not consistent enough.

"This is a different team, a new year. But our goal is for every guy on our team to take on a defensive identity."

The Golden Eagles haven't played much in front of fans yet, just an open scrimmage at the Al McGuire Center and a practice for season-ticket holders at Fiserv. MU opted for two closed-door scrimmages against Loyola (Chicago) and Missouri instead of exhibition games.

"We got good competition," Smart said. "We got a lot of good looks. We got a chance to play against teams that do things a little bit differently than us."
