It’s time to Band Together.

The first in The Sacramento Bee’s free online and live concert series starts at 7 p.m. tonight. We’re featuring local musicians and artists, starting with a show by Bird Control, the Cassette Idols and Mean Muggers. Our friends at Old Ironsides helped curate the show.

There’s plenty more to come after tonight. Since we announced the Band Together concert series, several jazz, rock, classical and folk bands have reached out to us asking to perform. More to come on that later.

Where to watch tonight’s concert:

Bird Control

Based out of Sacramento, Bird Control is a group of five gigging drummers that started off playing music together for fun – now this band has come together to write rock music you can move to – with Riki on vocals, Brenden & Tyler on guitar, Demetrius on bass, and Elitt on drums. Bird Control performs quite a wide range of rock influenced by alt-rock and punk.

Here is Riki’s YouTube channel where she performs several covers.

Cassette Idols

Cassette Idols are a Sacramento-based alternative rock band, with members who have emanated from local bands of the not-so-distant past (Killdevil, The Hybrid Creeps, and Flawless Design to name a few ), and who are constantly striving to find that “sweet spot” in the vacillation of the genres of punk, heavy metal and indie rock.

Drawing inspiration from the late 80s and early 90s brand of the aforementioned musical styles, the 2-and-a half-year-old band emits loud and urgent guitar-driven songs blended well with a dollop of pop. The group combines hooky riffs and melodic lead guitars with rich, technical drums and fluid bass lines, while coloring lyrics with dream-inspired sappy overtones.

Their band site, with links to their albums, can be found here.

Mean Muggers

Formerly the Monomyth Inception, Mean Muggers play original and cover songs from rock, blues, indie, and other influences in acoustic or electric. Check out more of their music here.

And, last but not least, there’s Old Ironsides, the great old downtown restaurant, bar and music venue.

For now, sit back and enjoy tonight’s show.

And remember: When we Band Together, our local music and arts scene are stronger.
