Louisville Cardinals women's basketball loses ACC Tournament title game to Virginia Tech

Coverage from ACC championship game: After impressive run, Louisville women's basketball falls in ACC Tournament title game

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The ACC is one of the deepest women’s basketball conferences in the country this season.

No conference has more teams ranked in the top 30 of the NET rankings than the ACC's seven: Notre Dame (6), Duke (9), Virginia Tech (12), N.C. State (19), Florida State (20), North Carolina (23) and Louisville (27).

That created a tough regular season outing for Louisville, which lost six conference games this season, the most since it joined the league in 2013. The Cardinals responded with a postseason surge, and is now one game away from winning a second ACC Tournament championship since 2018. Louisville will play Virginia Tech for the title at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Cardinals also made the ACC title game in 2021 but lost to N.C. State.

Louisville's tournament run began with a commanding 74-48 quarterfinals win over Wake Forest on Friday, avenging a 68-57 loss to the Demon Deacons from Jan. 26. The Cardinals' revenge tour continued with a 64-38 thrashing of regular-season champion Notre Dame — which U of L lost to twice during during regular season — in the semifinals.

U of L entered the ACC Tournament projected by ESPN as a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament. It will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament if it wins the title game Sunday. Even if the Cardinals lose, their tournament showing should boost their seed in the NCAA Tournament. The conference is projected to get nine teams into the tournament, the most of any league in the country.
