Watch Mae Martin Talk Bathwater, Rehab in Netflix Stand-Up Trailer

There is good news for fans of LGBTQ-inclusive comedy on Netflix, as a new stand-up special will be available to enjoy on March 28 that features Canadian nonbinary comedian Mae Martin’s jokes, which often poke fun at themself.

Netflix describes the special as being “from a mythical moose encounter to the gender spectrum, Mae Martin reflects on a world off its axis in this comedy special.” The show’s trailer gives viewers a sneak peek of what they can expect from Mae Martin: SAP regarding laugh-out-loud humor.

“I ended up in rehab when I was 19, but I wanted to fit in with all these kids,” Martin said in a clip from the special. “They had nicknames for each other. I’ve never had a nickname."

“I came in one morning, and one of the guys goes, ‘Yo, Bathwater, what’s up?’” they said.

“I was like, Bathwater!” Martin exclaimed in the way that a new kid fitting in at a new school would. After months of being called that, they asked their friends: “Why do you call me bathwater? And they said, ‘Oh, it’s because when you arrived, we all had a conversation, and we decided that you look like the type of kid who would drink their own bathwater.”

Martin chuckled: “It’s so specific, so insulting, and creative.”

The special is directed by out comedian and creator Abbi Jacobson of Broad City and who is behind the Prime Video series A League of Their Own.

Martin filmed the special at Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre during their latest tour, nearly two years after their Netflix series Feel Good ended.

In 2019, Martin made their Netflix comedy debut with a half-hour set on Comedians of the World, and the Netflix Is a Joke Fest special Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration. Their most recent major television appearance included a role on HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant.
