Watch: Massachusetts fourth grader makes Tom Brady mosaic — with Rubik's cubes

A Massachusetts fourth grader has combined two things he loves into one seriously impressive work of art.

Tom Brady + Rubik’s Cubes

Maxim Lin, a student at Sheehan Elementary School in Westwood, Massachusetts, not far from Gillette Stadium, created a mosaic of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s face using only Rubik’s Cubes.

Lin is an avid Rubik’s solver, came up with the idea last summer to create the artwork using only the six-sided puzzles.

First he made a graphical poster of the design, a photo of Brady appearing to be looking up, perhaps at a video board, wearing his Patriots’ uniform. Lin added “TB12” in the bottom right corner.

999 Cubes

After planning it out and ordering hundreds of Rubik’s Cubes, Lin and his father began putting the project together around Christmas. Using a seven-foot by five-foot wooden frame, they placed the cubes to make the pixelated portrait.

Lin used 999 Cubes, 27 across and 37 rows high, to make the mosaic.

Hoping to catch Brady’s attention

Lin is hoping to get the attention of his favorite quarterback, along with Brady’s signature. He would then sell it and donate the money to his town’s school department for sports protective equipment.

Lin’s project will make its public debut at the Sheehan Elementary STEM festival on Wednesday.
