A chat over an office copy machine led to a Nobel Prize for scientists, Katalin Kariko and Dr. Drew Weissman.

The two first met at the University of Pennsylvania. Over the next 20 years or so, they collaborated on research that eventually led to the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. Some 600 million doses of the vaccine have already been delivered to Americans to protect against severe COVID-19. The vaccine technology is also being explored for use against other infectious diseases, cancer, genetic diseases, heart disease, allergies, and autoimmune diseases.

This year, the unsung heroes finally received the recognition their lifesaving work deserved when Weissman, a physician and immunologist, and Kariko, a biochemist and researcher, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Of course, the journey was a long one, and very much a team effort. And, on hearing the news, Dr. Weissman, was keen to share it with the people who made it all possible - his parents!
