WATCH: Should Payton Pritchard get the backup point guard slot when Marcus Smart returns?

The Boston Celtics have a lot of hard decisions to make in the weeks ahead of the 2022 NBA trade deadline, and one of them will be who to play at backup point guard once Marcus Smart — the team’s current starting floor general — returns from a stint in the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

Over the course of the last 11 games since the Oregon product got his first run of over 20 minutes per game, Pritchard has been averaging 11 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while shooting 45.1% overall and a sizzling 43.3% from beyond the arc. Over that same stretch, veteran guard Dennis Schroder has been scoring more (12.1 points per game) but much less efficiently, connecting on 41.1% of his shots overall and a very poor 30.2% from deep.

For a team that desperately needs to improve its offense — particularly from 3-point range — there seems to be a strong case for promoting the second-year guard in the rotation.
