What is Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl about?

This 2003 swashbuckler based on Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean theme-park ride grossed $654 million worldwide, making Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom into movie stars. It also signaled something of a turning point in the career of Johnny Depp, who’d just come off of roles in Blow, From Hell, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. (As he told the press at the time, he wanted to make a film he could watch with his children; it certainly wouldn’t be the last.)

Set in eighteenth-century Jamaica, this now-classic adventure flick features magical talismans, the undead, and an ancient Aztec curse. Will Turner joins forces with the infamous Jack Sparrow to rescue Elizabeth Swann from the brig of a ghost ship belonging to the villainous Captain Hector Barbossa. Captain Barbossa believes, wrongly, that Elizabeth’s blood is the key to freeing him and his undead crew from the curse of the Black Pearl.

“It’s a miracle that a movie based on an old theme-park ride wasn’t a total disaster,” USA Today’s Brian Truitt wrote in 2017. “Instead, what pop culture got was an enjoyable romp that offered romance, swordplay, a throwback sense of high-seas Hollywood action, and arguably Depp’s most watchable character. The first film also introduced the familial legacies that power the Pirates mythology and set a high bar for special effects: The sight of Barbossa’s cursed crew as they’re transformed into skeletons by the moonlight is still one of the best scenes in the entire series.”
