The Boston Red Sox came through late in Wednesday's game vs. the Seattle Mariners to earn one of their biggest wins of the season.

The two American League wild card contenders were tied at 3-3 heading into extra innings, then Boston exploded for six runs in the top of the 10th. The rally began with an Alex Verdugo single followed by a Hunter Renfoe walk and a Xander Bogaerts base hit.

Tomase: Schwarber's bat too good to sit because of his glove

After Verdugo scored on a passed ball and J.D. Martinez added another run on an infield single, Kyle Schwarber stayed hot with a two-run base hit to right field that extended the Red Sox lead to three.

A Bobby Dalbec walk then set the stage for Christian Vazquez, who doubled with the bases loaded to drive in two more insurance runs.

The Mariners only were able to muster one run in the bottom of the inning, resulting in a 9-4 final score.

With the dramatic victory, the Red Sox improve to 8-1 in extra-inning road games this season. That ties the franchise record for most wins in extra-inning road games in a single campaign, per Elias Sports Bureau.

The victory was a crucial one as both the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees, who are tied and a 1/2 game behind Boston in the wild-card race respectively, won on Wednesday. Seattle is now four games back.

The Red Sox will look to hold on to the top wild-card spot when they host the lowly Baltimore Orioles for a three-game set starting Friday.
