WATCH: Researchers tag first great white shark of the season off Cape Cod

The first great white shark of the summer was tagged off Cape Cod Thursday.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said the shark was found off the Chatham north inlet on Thursday. It was estimated to be about 12 feet long.

Dr. Greg Skomal, a scientist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, worked with the Conservancy to tag the animal.

The shark will be entered into the Conservancy’s Sharktivity app, which tracks information about sightings to raise awareness of the presence of great white sharks along the New England coast.

This weekend alone, there were more than a dozen shark sightings reported off the Outer Cape, according to the app.

Sharktivity collects tracker data, as well as crowdsourced reports from beachgoers, researchers and safety officials.
