Watch This Runner Set a New Record for the Beer Mile

Running a mile in under 5 minutes is the kind of feat that might cause plenty of people to dry-heave or even vomit—and that's before you even throw a couple of beers into the mix. This is the exact premise of the Beer Mile race, where participants must run a mile while chugging beers between laps.

Canadian runner Corey Bellemore has just set a new all-time world record for the Beer Mile, completing all four laps of a track— and downing four beers—in just 4 minutes 28 seconds. "I'm really happy with the result," he said in a post-race interview.

This is not Bellemore's first or even second time setting a new best in the Beer Mile. It's actually his fourth world record, and he was in competition with himself, after last breaking the record with a 4:33 finishing time in San Francisco in 2017. "I knew the potential was there, and I'm finally happy to go sub-4:30," he said. "There's still room for improvement, but overall, good quality field, everyone ran really fast, so it was an awesome day."

While he's an old pro at this point Bellemore doesn't do any kind of special training or preparation for the Beer Mile, having previously told Men's Health: "I just show up on race day and hope my stomach can handle it all."

When former Olympic runner Nick Symmonds attempted the Beer Mile on his YouTube channel, he explained that while burping up suds the entire way may make for an uncomfortable race, the point is not to run while intoxicated. "The alcohol doesn’t hit you," he said. "You don't have enough time for the alcohol to make you feel drunk. You just have a ton of adrenaline and a lot of cramping in your stomach."
