As the powerful Hurricane Idalia moves across Florida after making landfall at Keaton Beach in the Big Bend area, Gulf Coast residents are getting slammed with rain and rising storm surge. Powerful waves crested sea walls, flooded streets and endangered homes.

Just after 10 a.m. the Weather Channel's Jim Cantore reported a record 6.9 foot storm surge in Cedar Key.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 49 counties, a broad swath that stretches across the northern half of the state from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Coast as catastrophic storm surge is expected.
