Series history: South Carolina and Missouri have met 13 times since 1979, with the Tigers leading the Gamecocks 8-5 (6-5 in conference matchups). Missouri has won the last four games against USC after losing three in a row from 2016-18. South Carolina is 2-3 against the Tigers on the road.

Injury report, top storylines for the game

  • Injury report: Running back Mario Anderson (ankle) practiced and will be available Saturday, coach Shane Beamer said. Linebacker Stone Blanton (thigh bruise) is probable, and right tackle Vershon Lee (who started at center for the first five games of the season) is out with “a bit of a knee” issue, Beamer said. Beamer also added that offensive lineman Cason Henry, who’s been out since leaving the North Carolina game early, is making good progress, though he won’t be available against Missouri.

  • Every game is a must-win, this one included: The Gamecocks are 2-4 and two games under .500 for the first time under Beamer. They need four wins in their final six contests to reach bowl eligibility. Those four wins might be hard to find. South Carolina will have to win at least one of its two remaining road games or all four home games in November.

  • Containing Missouri’s offense: The Tigers have the fourth best total offense in the SEC (behind LSU, Georgia and Ole Miss). Sophomore Luther Burden III ranks second in the country with 808 receiving yards this season. Quarterback Brady Cook has the sixth most passing yards in the NCAA with 2,054. Running back Cody Schrader has the 18th most rushing yards in the nation with 648. The Gamecocks have the worst total defense in the SEC and rank 121st in the NCAA.

  • Getting South Carolina’s defense off the field: Several of South Carolina’s defensive backs played 70 or more plays against Florida last weekend, Beamer said. That’s because the Gamecocks’ offense struggles to convert on third down (37.5% conversion rate, which is 91st in FBS), and their defense struggles to stop opponents from converting on third (40.2% third-down rate allowed, which is 80th in FBS) and fourth downs (71.4% allowed, which is 119th in FBS).
