What is Star Wars Rebels about?

The animated series Star Wars Rebels was the first big “event” project of the franchise’s Disney era. Combining original Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie’s unmistakable design sense with the cartoon aesthetic of The Clone Wars (2008), Rebels introduced an all-new cast of heroes fighting back against the oppressive Galactic Empire. This four-season-long story explores the early beginnings of the Rebel Alliance, brings old legends back into the fold, and rips the seams of the Star Wars universe wide open, leaving new story threads for the coming decades to pick up and interrogate. It was a bold direction to take this new era of Lucasfilm right out of the gate, and, crucially, it’s a family-friendly starting point for Star Wars newcomers.

Rebels takes place 14 years after the last of the movie prequels, 2005’s [Revenge of the Sith], when the evil Emperor enacted ‘Order 66’ to wipe out all the Jedi in the galaxy, sending the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda into hiding,” USA Today’s Brian Truitt wrote in 2014. “Since then, Kanan [Jarrus] has been on the down-low, too. He keeps his lightsaber under lock and key and brandishes a blaster instead to avoid the attention of the Empire, especially the Inquisitor (a Sith villain) and his stormtroopers. But Kanan gets his Force-ful groove back with his crew on the spaceship the Ghost and fights back against the Imperial menace.”

The show stars Taylor Gray, Vanessa Marshall, Freddie Prinze Jr., Steve Blum, Tiya Sircar, Dee Bradley Baker, David Oyelowo, Lars Mikkelsen, Jason Isaacs, and Sam Witwer.
