What is Return of the Jedi about?

Here’s where the journey of Darth Vader, once known as Anakin Skywalker, reaches its end. A lonesome old man in a mask, made a monster by the machinery of empire and the dark side of the Force, Vader’s story is ultimately about the redemptive power of love. And Luke Skywalker’s refusal to keep fighting—to kill his father in spite of what goodness remains in him—is an inspiring, all-too-rare example of what a compassionate hero truly looks like.

Return of the Jedi delivers bigger space battles than either A New Hope or Empire, it introduces the adorable (and divisive) Ewoks to the fold, and it’s got a cathartic, feel-good ending. The last Jedi defeats the Emperor; the Rebellion shatters the Imperial fleet; fireworks and music ring out all across the galaxy in celebration of the rebels’ triumph. If the story had ended here, as it did before the Walt Disney Company purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Wars would still remain a beloved pop-culture touchstone.

“As directed by Richard Marquand from Lucas’s story, Return of the Jedi is legitimate heir to the cycle of films beginning with Star Wars (directed by Lucas) and The Empire Strikes Back (directed by Irvin Kershner),” Jack Garner wrote in his 1983 review for the Democrat & Chronicle (part of the USA Today Network). “From the continuity of characters and the pop-culture philosophy of ‘the Force’ to the sweeping symphonic music of John Williams, these films are as much one epic as Francis Ford Coppola’s two Godfather movies are.”

Return of the Jedi welcomes back most of the cast from Empire: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Billy Dee Williams, Frank Oz, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, Peter Mayhew, Alec Guinness—along with the prequel trilogy’s Ian McDiarmid (originally, in 1983, this was his first appearance in the role).
