On Sunday, a TikTok user posted a video of a Starbucks order that was delivered by a flying drone.
The dropoff was completed by Flytrex, a startup that is looking to revolutionize delivery services.
The company delivers goods from several major chains, including Starbucks, McDonalds, and Walmart.
In a viral video on TikTok, a Starbucks customer detailed a relatively new phenomenon - automated drone delivery.
The video was uploaded on Sunday and quickly garnered over 2.2 million views on the app as users took to the comments section to point out the futuristic nature of the delivery service.
The TikTok shows @brithiq waiting in a field for her Starbucks order to be delivered. A drone appears out of the sky and slowly lowers a package to the ground.
The product is packaged in a Flytrex bag. Flytrex is an automated drone-delivery startup based out of Israel that has partnered with major chains like Starbucks, McDonalds, and Walmart to test its drone delivery system through app purchases. The service currently appears to only be available in select locations in North Carolina.
To place an order via a Flytrex drone, a customer can download the Flytrex app, browse through restaurants and select their meal. The customer can then pay for their order via a credit or debit card on the app, and select a preferred drop-off point to pick up their order.
The program works by delivering food orders to random pick-up points that are communicated to customers over text and offers updates as to the drones progress.
On Monday, @brithiq also posted a video of a McDonalds drone delivery through Flytrex. In the video, the user breaks down the delivery and ordering process.
While robot delivery services have become more popular in major cities, drone delivery is still a relatively new practice. Flytrex has only just recently launched its commercial delivery service after receiving approval from the Federal Aviation Administration in May to fly over populated areas.
Though the service is being gradually rolled out and is only available in select locations, the process could eventually decrease the need for delivery drivers. Walmart has been working with Flytrex since 2020 to pilot drone-delivery services. During a time when many major chains are struggling to staff workers, drone delivery poses an opportunity for many major retailers and could some day help chains cut back on hiring needs.
