James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is here, and it’s being met with wide acclaim for its tight-but-goofy script and lovable cast of oddballs. DC’s fan-favorite task force includes Margot Robbie’s iconic Harley Quinn and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag; they’re joined this time by King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone), Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, and breakout star Daniela Melchior, who plays Ratcatcher 2. Not to mention a bunch of other supervillain weirdos charged with saving the world. If you enjoyed Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey or Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll have a great time here.

The Suicide Squad hit theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on August 6, and HBO Max subscribers with the ad-free plan can stream the film as much as they want between now and September 5.

Where can you watch The Suicide Squad?

You can find The Suicide Squad in theaters near you, but you can also catch it on HBO Max with an ad-free-tier subscription. HBO Max is currently only available in the United States and certain U.S. territories, and can be accessed with internet connection through Android products, Roku, Chromecast, iOS, some gaming consoles, and certain smart TV platforms.

HBO Max is home to HBO films and series, Max Original series and films, DC movies and shows, TCM content, the Adult Swim Collection, Studio Ghibli films, Cartoon Network’s vast catalogue, the Sesame Workshop collection, Looney Tunes, and more. The platform is constantly releasing new content, such as Allen v Farrow, season 2 of His Dark Materials, The King of Staten Island, and more.

What is The Suicide Squad about?

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad follows the events of the 2016 Suicide Squad film as well as the events of Birds of Prey. The Suicide Squad has an all-star cast—seriously. So many stars. Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, and Peter Capaldi star, and that’s not even everyone. The film will feature members of the Suicide Squad from the 2016 film such as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) as well as newcomers like Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and King Shark (Sylvester Stallone).

In the film, Amanda Waller returns to give the Suicide Squad a job, promising to remove 10 years from their sentences upon its completion. The trailer for the film features members of the Suicide Squad doing what they do best: barely completing missions and generally being extremely chaotic. There’s mention of a rescue mission to save Harley Quinn (who ends up not needing saving); King Shark’s appearances end up being adorable despite the fact that in most of them he’s either eating people or simply holding body parts. There’s also a kaiju.

If you want to watch the 2016 Suicide Squad or Birds of Prey before The Suicide Squad is released, both are available on HBO Max. The film also opens the door for a new series starring John Cena called Peacemaker (after his Suicide Squad character), that will also air on HBO Max in 2022.
