A Taylor Swift ad was met with boos when it was shown at a New York Giants game on Monday night. It was streamed to promote the singer’s upcoming concert movie about her hugely successful Eras tour.

The NFL had briefly updated its Instagram account with a post saying: “The Chiefs are 2-0 as Swifties.” However, the post was removed a few hours later after it received hundreds of negative responses from fans.

NFL fans weren’t best pleased with seeing Swift’s ad in the middle of the football. Some even said that the constant cutaways to the singer during the coverage were “destroying football”.

Fox contributor Tomi Lahren wrote on Twitter: “The wall-to-wall coverage of Taylor Swift at this game is annoying AF. I don’t even like football and I agree it’s destroying football. Just enough.”

Other fans weren’t too happy about the cutaway shots to Taylor and her friends. “These Taylor Swift cutaways during Chiefs games have got to go,” one fan said.

But Terry Bradshaw, the co-host of Fox NFL Sunday, seemed to be more of a fan. He even gave handmade Taylor Swift friendship bracelets to his co-workers during the live broadcast. As he handed them out, he said: “You’re now part of the Swiftie group.”

In this clip, fans are seen booing.

Across NBC’s digital platforms, including Peacock, the game drew in 1.85 million viewers, NBC Sports’ largest streaming audience ever for a regular-season Sunday NFL game, and a 42% increase from last year’s Week 4 game, which featured Patrick Mahomes facing off against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The previous night, Kansas City Chiefs played the New York Jets and 27 million people tuned in to watch the game – thanks to Taylor Swift. Broadcaster NBC attributed this huge boost in ratings partly to the attendance of the pop star.

The event was the second-most-watched National Football League game of the season, behind the September 7 season opener that drew 27.5 million viewers, said NBC.

Taylor Swift will be hitting the UK for her Eras tour for a sold-out run of shows in June 2024, starting in Edinburgh. But before that, the concert film of Taylor Swift’s behemoth Eras tour will screen in British cinemas this October.

The film will play in more than 100 countries from October 13, when it is released in the US, Canada and Mexico.
