A day more than a month after the Texas Tech football team popped Mississippi State 34-7 in the 2021 Liberty Bowl, Texas Tech basketball hosts the Mississippi State Bulldogs as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge this weekend at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.

On Monday, the Red Raiders lost a double-overtime thriller 94-91 to Big 12 foe Kansas.

The loss prevented Texas Tech (15-5, 5-3) from becoming only the third Big 12 team to complete a regular-season sweep of a Bill Self-coached Kansas (17-2, 6-1).

"I thought we stood toe-to-toe with them," Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said. "We dug a hole for us, several times. At halftime, we were behind and got even further behind with about 10 to go but came back. ... I thought we were going win it in that first overtime."

"I mean, we came to fight," Texas Tech forward Bryson Williams, whoi scored a season-best 33 points, said following the loss. "Coming into Phog Allen (Fieldhouse). This is a hard place to play. You're playing against a legendary coach and playing against one of the most talented teams in the country — you've gotta come and bring it.

"And we came to do that tonight. We just fell short."

Mississippi State lost 82-74 to Kentucky in their previous game Jan. 25. The Bulldogs bring an overall record of 13-6, including 4-3 in the SEC, to .

In the last match-up between Texas Tech basketball and Mississippi State, which took place Nov. 20, 2015, the Red Raiders won 74-72 in Starkville, Miss.
