Watch: Tom and Jerry experience durian for first time in Singapore-set series

Cartoon Network’s first-ever localized “Tom and Jerry” series that is set in Singapore has finally received a release date months after Warner Bros. Discovery first announced the project.
Pulling the veil: Cartoon Network Asia officially revealed in a YouTube video uploaded on Oct. 5 that its first-ever localized “Tom and Jerry” series, set in Singapore, will be available on Cartoon Network and for streaming on HBO Go starting Oct. 21.
About the schedule: The new series will consist of seven episodes, with a new one released weekly on Cartoon Network and Cartoon Network Asia’s YouTube channel. Meanwhile, the first four episodes of the new show will become immediately available on HBO Go, followed by the rest in November.

What is it about: The upcoming “Tom and Jerry” series will see the beloved cat and mouse frenemies pull their adorably chaotic antics in Singapore as they “experience local delicacies durian and ice kacang, and encounter Merli – a character inspired by Singapore’s mythical Merlion – in iconic locations like the Botanic Gardens, Sentosa and Marina Bay,” Warner Bros Discovery’s head of kids’ content for South-east Asia, Christopher Ho, said in a statement.
Authentic to Singapore: Ho noted that it was important for them to “create stories and environments that feel authentically Singapore,” adding that at the same time, “honor the distinct animation style and sense of humor that has made Tom and Jerry so well-loved for generations.”
The context: Warner Bros. Discovery first announced the project in a press release on July 26, explaining that the new show will be produced locally in Asia. The new “Tom and Jerry” series was animated by Aum Animation Studios India, with the stories and design created by Singapore-based Robot Playground Media and Chips and Toon Studios.

The series is reportedly part of a wider partnership between Warner Bros. Discovery and the Singapore Tourism Board to help the city-state’s tourism industry.
Warner Bros. Discovery also noted in the press release that “Tom and Jerry” will first become available in Southeast Asia through HBO Go as well as in Taiwan and Hong Kong before its international release.

Teasing the fans: Following the announcement, the company released a teaser on Aug. 7 which featured their encounter with durian, a popular fruit found in Southeast Asia that is also referred to as the "King of Fruits."
