Boston point guard Tremont Waters had a career high against the New York Knicks in the Celtics’ 2020-21 season finale on Sunday, nearly leading an epic comeback by the team’s reserves before falling to New York 96-92.

The Connecticut native scored 17 points — the most he has scored at the NBA level — and recorded 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and just 1 personal foul in 25 minutes of game time off the bench. Waters shot 7-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and no attempts from the charity stripe.

While the former LSU standout’s future with the club is unclear given the team’s escalating needs moving into a period of hopeful playoff contention next season, Sunday’s performance should be another positive data point for the New Havenite to latch on somewhere next season if Boston doesn’t bring him back.

We may see more of Waters in the postseason, but watch the video of his highlights against the Knicks by Tomasz Kordylewski while we wait for the play-in game against the Washington Wizards to tip off on Tuesday.
