One of Hollywood’s favorite families had a big and undoubtedly bittersweet moment over the weekend as baby Capri — the daughter of Vanessa Bryant and late great NBA icon Kobe Bryant — took her first steps. Vanessa shared the heartwarming milestone on social media so fans could take part in the joy of the 11-month-old’s foray into walking. And not surprisingly, the little girl earned a big round of applause from everyone in the room as she toddled into her proud mom’s arms.

Bryant shared the sweet video capturing the moment on Sunday evening, writing, “My baby!!!! So proud of my Koko Bean. Capri took her first steps from her auntie Sophie to mama today.” In the video, Capri can be seen sitting in the lap of Vanessa’s sister Sophie at first. But as Aunt Sophie tries to steady the little girl, it’s clear Capri is raring to walk. When Sophie lets go, Capri takes a few strong steps before stumbling into Mom’s arms. “I’m so proud of you!” Vanessa gushes as she smothers her baby with hugs and kisses while everyone else in the room cheers.

Although they aren’t seen in the frame, Capri’s big sisters Natalia, 17, and Bianka, 3, were likely two of the voices cheering on the toddler — Vanessa often shares photos and videos of the tight-knit family together.

Of course, as happy as the moment is for Vanessa and the girls, it’s hard not to think about the fact that dad Kobe and Capri’s other big sister Gianna should have been there for it. The pair tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in January, and 2020 has thus far been a year of bittersweet firsts for the Bryants. In April, Vanessa marked her first Easter and wedding anniversary without Kobe and GiGi. In May, Vanessa’s 38th birthday, Gianna’s 14th birthday and Mother’s Day all came and went without the two.

But as Vanessa noted on her birthday, every day is a balance of honoring Kobe and Gianna while still being present for Natalia, Bianka and Capri. “Missing the love of my life and my sweet little Mamacita — my fellow Taurus,” she wrote at the time. “Grateful to wake up to my 3 sweet girls today. Wish we were all together.”
