Water distribution helps families during ‘boil water’ notice

ARDMORE, Ala. (WHNT) – The City of Ardmore pushed through its second day under a “boil water” notice. On Sunday, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) helped provide clean water to families in need.

“I wouldn’t care if I had to stand out here for six hours just for a chance to get water for my family,” said Kevin Carroll. “There ain’t nothing a father wouldn’t do for his family.”

The husband and soon-to-be father stood in below-freezing temperatures Sunday morning waiting for the 10-pallett truckload of water to be delivered at the Ardmore Water Department.

Carroll wasn’t the only one thinking of his family. Dozens of cars lined up at the department waiting for the free water. Dwight Colston said “icy roads” were too dangerous for his family to travel on; so he came alone.

“I got a brother-in-law and sister-in-law on Cedar Hill Road, which is extremely nasty. And I was going to try and get them some, plus me and my wife.”

Icy roads were also to blame for a delay in water delivery. Many people left after hearing the news, but later returned for a case of water.

The Limestone Water & Sewer Authority says the loss of pressure in the water distribution system may cause movement of outside water into pipes through cracks, breaks or joints — and has the potential of fecal contamination or other ‘disease-causing’ organisms entering the system.

The LCWSA issued the boil water notice Friday, which means you cannot drink or use the water out of your faucet without boiling it first.

“I don’t really trust boiling it,” said Colston. “I mean if they say that there’s something enough that’s wrong with it that you have to boil it before using it, I don’t trust that.”

TVA reaches highest weekend power demand on Sunday

Many don’t know when the boil water notice will be lifted — but are thankful for the help along the way.

“It means a lot to everybody here, including myself,” said Carroll.

The Tennessee Valley Authority provided 112 cases of water to the city of Ardmore and three other communities dealing with water shortages and boil advisories after the winter storm – Leighton, Lexington and Stevenson.

TVA spokesperson Clarissa McClain says relief efforts are likely to continue this week if additional requests come in.
