Water main break hits Clarks Summit

Dec. 24—CLARKS SUMMIT — A water main break left many without water on a chilly Christmas Eve.

The 12-inch break, which occurred on State Street, was called in at 3:30 a.m., Susan Turcmanovich, spokeswoman for Pennsylvania American Water, said.

About 30 customers in the immediate area were without water, she added.

A portion of the road in the 400 block of South State Street was buckled Saturday morning, as crews from the water company inspected the site and directed traffic around it.

Turcmanovich said crews isolated the area where the break occurred, adding she anticipates repairs will be done by early Saturday evening.

The break affected several businesses on the street. Lance Miley, owner of Making Music Matter for Kids at 336 S. State St., said he saw a "river of water" down the street during the early morning hours.

For The Jewelry Room owner David Banks, the beak couldn't come at a worse time, as the holiday is his busiest day for business.

"It's concerning," he said inside the store, also at 336 S. State St.

The cold weather froze the water flowing from the water main, creating ice along the street.
