Here is what prompted the advisory on Friday:

Water customers in the city and town of Canandaigua living generally east of Route 332 and the northwest section of the town of Hopewell are advised to boil their water for drinking and culinary purposes until further notice.

A rolling boil must be maintained for a minimum of three minutes.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday, a water transmission main along between Jefferson Street and Ontario Street in the city burst. When water pipes lose pressure, it increases the chances that untreated water and harmful microbes could enter the water distribution system.

A boil-water advisory is in effect for certain areas of the city and town of Canandaigua and town of Hopewell.

Upon the completion of the repairs, the city will conduct water sampling for bacteriological tests until two consecutive samples have been deemed to be in compliance with city, state and federal water quality standards.

At that point the city will advise that your drinking water no longer needs to be boiled. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly.
