A leak from a water main in Palm Springs on Tuesday damaged and flooded a portion of East Palm Canyon Drive, near the Ace Hotel.
Someone was working on the road and hit a Desert Water Agency water main with their equipment, a Desert Water Agency spokesperson said. It was not immediately clear what they were working on, but they were not affiliated with DWA.
There was a pit in the ground in the area of 650 East Palm Canyon Drive. Maggie Miles, who lives in the apartment complex located there, said it looks to be at least 10 feet. She and her neighbors had to move their cars further down the street to avoid the water, she added.
"The water shooting out of the street like that, I mean it was going feet into the air and I've never seen anything like that," Miles said. "It was quite the sight to see up close."
The DWA has since fixed the leak and was repairing the street Tuesday afternoon. The road was no longer filled with water as of early afternoon, but only one lane in the area remained open to divert traffic away from the damage.
