Water pumping station tops new construction projects in Henderson

HENDERSON, Ky. − The construction of a Henderson Water Utilities water pumping station at 1022 Sand Lane topped new construction activity here last month.

The City of Henderson secured a new-commercial building permit valued at nearly $3.3 million for the project.

“The pump station is being installed to help with water supply and pressure for Pratt Paper,” the $600 million corrugated box recycling mill and adjacent box manufacturing plant that’s under construction on the U.S. 425/South Bypass, city Public Information Officer Holli Blanford said in an email message. “It’ll actually benefit many businesses and residents on that side of town as they’ll also see an increase in water pressure.”

That was by far the biggest building permit issued here during the first two months of the year, accounting for nearly half of the value of all construction in the city.

Meanwhile, a permit authorizing remodeling of the North South Café (formerly the North-South Truck Stop) near Robards to redevelop it as a convenience store with fuel pumps was issued last month by the county codes office.

AKSHAR21 Inc. received a $100,000 commercial building permit for remodeling of the North South building at 14260 U.S. 41-South, including building a walk-in cooler.

The project will also include construction of two canopies, with gasoline pumps out front and diesel pumps beside the building.

The owners sought a rezoning of the 2.3-acre tract last October from Agricultural to General Business District. The Henderson City-County Planning Commission unanimously approved the rezoning, in part because the property previously had a convenience store and gas pumps, and also because there are several large factories and other employers in the area but there are no fuel pumps in that area of the county (the nearest pumps are in Sebree or Henderson).

A Canadian company, Cordelio Power, received two permits of $21,700 each for the erection of a pair of weather towers, nearly 200 feet tall each, on Spottsville Bluff City Road and Eutopia Road, that will be used to gauge the potential of the two sites in eastern Henderson County for a future wind farm for electric generation.

A pair of permits for new single-family residences were issued in February by the county codes office, bringing the total of housing starts so far this year to three. None were issued by the city during the first two months of the year.

During the first two months of 2022, a total of four permits had been issued for new houses.

In February, the total construction value of all building permits totaled $5 million, including $3.9 million in the city and $1.1 million in the county. That compares with just $771,270 of construction value in February 2022.
