A few multimillion-dollar structural projects are about to get underway for JEA.

The utility service is going to spend about a combined $10.2 million at two different Jacksonville locations. Permits for the projects were approved this month by the city's Building Inspections Division.

The larger-scale project will be erecting a new warehouse along with stormwater system improvements, new process piping and other upgrades at JEA’s Buckman Water Reclamation Facility at 2221 Buckman St.

This project will cost about $6.5 million and the warehouse will cover 3,200 square feet. It also comes as JEA recently broke ground on its massive new Greenland Water Reclamation Facility near the eTown development on the Southside.

For the Buckman makeover, JEA officials plan to relocate utilities and new lines for the first phase of a new biosolids building and new process area to handle an increase in the area’s population. The building at that location has stood since the 1970s.

Wharton-Smith Inc. is the contractor that will implement the changes that are expected to be completed in the summer or fall of 2023.

Meanwhile, the other permits approved by city officials will be at 10855 New Berlin Road near where the utility tore down the St. Johns River Power Park. JEA purchased a 6-acre parcel and existing metal buildings there in 2020 at the former Industrial Cleaning Technology business.

That project will involve renovation of those structures and turning them into training centers, said Simone Garvey-Ewan, JEA media relations coordinator.

“The renovations are to the existing offices, warehouse spaces, annex ‘carport’ building, and a new back guard house entrance,” Garvey-Ewan said.

One of the buildings at the New Berlin Road site will cover 14,459 square feet while the guard house is 313 square feet, according to the permits for the $3.7 million project.

The new training centers are needed since the JEA Technical Training Department lost its original training space at the St. Johns River Power Park headquarters on Church Street in 2018, Garvey-Ewan said.

Auld & White Constructors LLC will handle the New Berlin Road work for JEA.
