Water rescues, school cancellations in Isle of Wight after heavy rain

Heavy rainfall in Isle of Wight County led to school cancellations and flooded roads and vehicles Wednesday morning, according to tweets from the National Weather Service and the county’s school division.

Sheriff’s Office Lt. Tommy Porter said deputies rescued people from two cars trapped by rapidly rising waters on Great Springs Road, just outside of Smithfield and people were evacuated from nearby homes.

Porter said parts of U.S. 258 between the court house complex and Smithfeld are completely impassable and others are down to one late. He said a stretch of U.S. 460 near Windsor is also partly flooded.

Most secondary roads in the central part of the county are partly flooded, he said.
