When local hip-hop artist Tyl3r Davis released his song “The Waterboy” in October 2021, he was just a fan of the 1998 Adam Sandler comedy classic who had recorded a tribute to one of his favorite films. He had no idea that he’d be sharing the stage with one of the stars of the movie just a few months later.
Davis will be co-headlining “The Bourbon Bowl” concert with Peter Dante and Chosen Friends at 8 p.m. at Live Wire Athens on June 9. Dante, who co-starred with Sandler as quarterback Gee Grenouille in “The Waterboy,” is the vocalist for the Chosen Friends reggae band.
And speaking of Dante’s band, Davis had no idea such a thing existed prior to his song gaining the attention of the “Grandma’s Boy” star.

“(Live Wire owner) Brenden Robertson contacted Peter and put me in a group chat with him,” Davis told the Banner-Herald. “Peter loved the song and loved the idea of putting a concert together.”
Davis, who runs 333 Studio in Winder, came up with the song’s lines about Sandler’s character Bobby Boucher during a freestyle he’d rapped over a newly-produced beat. He continued the concept by standing in as Boucher for the track’s cover art and also performed the song while wearing an orange Boucher jersey onstage.

Fans of Sandler’s film catalog will also recognize Dante from such titles as “The Wedding Singer,” “Big Daddy,” “Mr. Deeds” and “50 First Dates” among several others. Dante’s debut album “Peace, Love, and Freedom” was released in 2011, and he has since appeared on several recordings by indie producer Shadoe.
Davis and Dante will be supported by Athens hip-hop artists Moone and Sajaad, and the concert will feature a set by DJ Sublime. Dante’s most recent film role was in director William Leonardo Molina’s 2021 action comedy “The Pizza Joint.”
