Waterford names McNamara new recreation and parks director

Jan. 3—WATERFORD — Ryan McNamara has been named the town's new director of recreation and parks.

Most recently, McNamara served as interim director after the retirement of former director Brian Flaherty last October. McNamara was hired as the assistant director for the department in 2004 and served in that role until taking on the interim position.

"It's a wonderful honor and responsibility for me that I don't take lightly," McNamara said in a press release. I am committed to enhancing and diversifying the department's recreational opportunities for all residents."

McNamara received his master's degree in sport management and recreation from Springfield College in 2003. He holds professional licenses in sports turf management and youth sports administration as well as state and national recreation and park certifications.

McNamara oversaw various operations of the Recreation & Parks Department in his 18 years on the job, including the development of the maintenance procedures and controls as well as the opening of the Community Center. He has worked with various boards and committees to support the growth of recreational services and community events.

"Ryan's knowledge of the department, familiarity with residents, positive work relationship with his team of staff and his commitment to the Town of Waterford, makes this a seamless and smooth transition," said First Selectman Rob Brule.
