Cold weather and the recent snow storm has resulted in a reprieve for Akron motorists who use Waterloo Road to drive under Interstate 77 in Firestone Park.

A section of the road just east of the I-77 overpass had been scheduled to close on Monday when more than a foot of snow fell in the area. Thanks to the sub-freezing weather that followed, the road will remain open until mid February, according to city officials.

A complete closure between the interstate and Chaffin Road to the west is set for Feb. 14 when workers start work to replace a culvert where Brewster Creek passes under Waterloo Road.

Access for local residents will be maintained, but through-traffic past I-77 will be cut. Traffic exiting I-77 south at Coventry Street will not be able to turn left onto Waterloo Road.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured using Brown Street, East Wilbeth Road and South Arlington Street. Westbound traffic will be detoured using South Arlington Street, East Wilbeth Road and Coventry Street.

Completion of the five-month project, which had been scheduled to wrap-up June 17, may also be delayed.
