Watermelon Game has launched worldwide on Nintendo Switch, following the huge viral success of the game.

Also known as Suika Game, the puzzle title challenges the player to gain high scores by dropping and combining fruit of the same type.

The game originally released in December 2021, but experienced a recent surge of popularity, firstly with VTubers in Japan — where it also topped the eShop download charts in September 2023.

Popular Western streamers including Ludwig and LilyPichu then contributed to raising the profile of the game outside of Japan.

Watermelon Game was initially exclusive to the Japan eShop, meaning that anybody who wanted to try it outside of Japan had to create a Japanese Nintendo account.

However, as of Friday (October 20), the game is available to buy internationally through the eShop. It is priced £2.69 in the UK and $2.99 in the US.

The only catch is that there is no language setting — so you would have to play the game in Japanese. But given that it's a puzzle game, it shouldn't be much of an issue if you can't read the language.

Watermelon Game has gained a reputation for being charming yet also addictive.

While it is simple to play, getting a high score can be challenging as it involves carefully managing the positioning of the larger fruit and taking into account the physics of how the fruit interact with each other.

When two fruit of the same type combine, they leave behind a new and larger fruit. Two cherries make a strawberry, two strawberries make grapes, and so on — with the largest fruit being a watermelon.

The game is over when any fruit spills over the top of the box.
