Watertown Lakers' forward Mason Witt tops list of top area performers for week of Jan. 10-16
Betcha you didn’t know that “glut” is the term used when somebody scores five goals in a hockey game.
The winner of this week’s glut award is Mason Witt, a senior forward for the Watertown Lakers boys’ hockey team who scored five goals on Saturday in a 6-0 South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association victory over Yankton.
Witt’s effort made him the honorary captain for the Public Opinion’s list of top area high school athletic performers for the week of Jan. 10-16.
Witt had some help from his teammates and some of them are also being honored this week, including:
• Thomas Foley — Foley had three assists in the game.
• Austin Green and Kaden German — The two Lakers were each credited with two assists in the win.
• Jacksyn Wirkus — Wirkus actually recorded assists in two games, one against Yankton and the other in a 4-1 loss to Sioux Falls II on Sunday.
Other top performers of the week are:
Boys Basketball
• Reese Stark, Watertown — Stark helped the Arrows snap a five-game losing skid by scoring 16 points in a win at Yankton.
• Ryker Erstad, Arlington — Let’s talk consistency. Erstad scored 30 points in a win over Elkton-Lake Benton and also had 30 along with five rebounds and three steals in a loss to Deuel.
• Britt Carlson, Arlington — Carlson chipped in with 19 points in the win over Elkton-Lake Benton.
• Drew Norberg, Watertown — Norberg scored 19 points in the Arrows’ loss to Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday.
• Sam Hansen, Great Plains Lutheran — Hansen produced 20 points and 11 rebounds in a win over North Central and also had 18 points in an overtime loss to Estelline-Hendricks.
• Ethan Kjenstad, Great Plains Lutheran — Kjenstad scored 19 points in the win and 16 in the loss.
• Carter Comes, Waverly-South Shore — Comes tallied 14 points and nine rebounds in a loss to Redfield in the Redfield Shootout.
• Easton Neuendorf, Hamlin — Neuendorf had 15 points, six assists and three steals in the Chargers’ loss to Sioux Valley.
• Tyson Stevenson, Hamlin — Stevenson poured in 20 points in a win over Milbank Area.
• Mehki Keller, Florence-Henry — Keller’s 19 points propelled the Falcons past Sisseton.
• Ty Langager, Sisseton — Langager notched 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
• Naethan Lovre, Deuel — Lovre scored 14 points in a win over Britton-Hecla and 17 more in a win over Arlington.
• Jonathan Johnston, Waubay-Summit — Johnston’s 25 points and seven rebounds carried the Mustangs past Tri-State.
• Carson Kirwan, Castlewood — Kirwan led a balanced attack with 15 points in the Warriors’ win over Great Plains Lutheran.
• Rett Osthus, De Smet — Osthus helped the top-rated Class B Bulldogs beat Lake Preston and Howard by scoring 18 points in each game.
• Kalen Garry, De Smet — Garry recorded 21 points and eight rebounds against Howard and 16 points against Lake Preston.
• Andrew Trooien, Deubrook Area — A 20-point outburst by Trooien carried the Dolphins past Estelline-Hendricks.
• Tristan Nielsen, Castlewood — Nielsen tallied 19 points in a loss to Clark-Willow Lake.
• Braxton Saathoff, Estelline-Hendricks — The Redhawks outlasted Great Plains Lutheran in overtime with Saathoff garnering 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
• Trey Maaland, Deuel — Maaland had 20 points in a win over Arlington.
• Oliver Vincent, Sioux Valley — Vincent’s 16 points and five rebounds led the Cossacks past Hamlin.
• Kaplan Felberg and Tyler O’Neill, Clark-Willow Lake — Felberg scored 18 points and O’Neill 17 in the Cyclones’ win over Castlewood.
• Trey Jurgens, Wilmot — Jurgens produced 19 points in a win over Britton-Hecla.
Girls Basketball
• Jaida Young, Watertown — Young did all she could (16 points and nine rebounds) to carry the Arrows to an overtime win over Yankton.
• Hadlee Holt, Lake Preston — Holt erupted for 28 points and 16 rebounds in a win over Dawson-Boyd in the Dakota Valley Conference Classic.
• Kami Wadsworth, Hamlin — Wadsworth scored 15 points in a win over Sioux Valley and added 27 points, eight rebounds and three assists in a win over Milbank.
• Caylin Kelly, Florence-Henry — Kelly’s 13 points and 11 rebounds weren’t enough to prevent the Falcons’ from suffering their first loss of the season against Lakota Tech in the Corn Palace Classic.
• Hadley Carlson and Addalyn Steffensen, Arlington — The Cardinals handled Elkton-Lake Benton with 19 points from Carlson and 18 from Steffensen.
• Paige Snell and Jaiden Bauer, Webster Area — Snell tallied 14 points and six rebounds and Bauer 13 and seven in a win over Clark-Willow Lake.
• Alicia Vig, Clark-Willow Lake — Vig led all players with 23 points and seven rebounds in the same game.
• Maddie Horn, Castlewood — Horn’s 19 points sparked the Warriors past Great Plains Lutheran.
• Mackenzie Everson, Castlewood — The Warriors also downed Clark-Willow Lake, getting 21 points from Everson.
• Halle Bauer, Great Plains Lutheran — Bauer scored 15 points in the loss to Castlewood and 11 in a win over Estelline-Hendricks.
• Emma Vandermeer, Deubrook Area — A 16-point effort by Vandermeer lifted the Dolphins past Estelline-Hendricks.
• Mary Rupp and Shali Laurence, Tri-State — Rupp finished with 17 points and Laurence 16 in a win over Waubay-Summit.
• Jada Burke, De Smet — The fifth-rated Bulldogs are still unbeaten and Burke’s a big reason why. She had 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals in a win over Howard.
• Mali York, Great Plains Lutheran — York ‘s 14 points, six rebounds, six steals and six assists led the Panthers past Wilmot.
• Hannah Leverson and Krista Langager, Sisseton — The Redmen handled Tiospa Zina with 18 points and four steals from Leverson and 15 points and eight rebounds from Langager.
Wrestling
• Sloan Johannsen, Watertown — We keep saving this spot for Sloan each week. He went 3-0 and won the 113-pound title in the Jerry Opbroek Invite at Mitchell. Oh yeah, he’s 26-0 on the season.
• Connor Hanson, Watertown — Hanson improved to 23-5 by going 3-0 and winning the 126-pound title at Mitchell.
• Draven Bau, Watertown — Last but not least in the Arrows’ trio of champions at Mitchell, Bau recorded three falls on the way to winning the 220-pound title. He is 16-4.
• Cael Larson, Webster Area — Like Johannsen, Larson is perfect on the season. He added four more wins to win the 138-pound title in the Battler Invite at Gettysburg and also improved to 29-0.
• Haeden Jorgenson, Webster Area — Larson’s teammate won three matches to take the 120-pound title at Gettysburg.
• Lucas Kannegieter, Clark-Willow Lake — Kannegieter opened his week by helping the Cyclones win three duals in a home quadrangular and closed it by winning the 170-pound title at Gettysburg. He went 3-0 in each competition.
• Annie Witt, Webster Area — Witt went 5-0 with five falls on the way to taking the 154-pound title in the Harrisburg Girls Wrestling Tournament.
Gymnastics
• Sadie Johnson, Estelline-Hendricks — Johnson compiled a score of 9.625 to win the floor exercise in the Madison Invitational.
• Hannah Cutshaw, Deuel — Cutshaw had a good day in the Madison Invite, taking fifth in the uneven bars and nine in the floor exercise. She finished seventh in the all-around with a score of 33.025.
Swimming
• Madelynne Storm and Justine Kranz, Watertown Area Swim Club — Storm (15-16 girls) and Kranz (11-12 girls) each won eight events over the weekend in the Optimist High Point Swim Meet held in Watertown.
• Sophia Krantz and Channing DeBoer, Watertown Area Swim Club — Krantz (13-14 girls) and DeBoer (9-10 boys) won seven races apiece for the Dolphins.
