Watkinsville Police Chief Shannon Brock has resigned his position due to a long-term debilitating health issue, according to an announcement issued Monday by city officials.

“Sadly, I am experiencing health issues that I am concerned are interfering with my ability to continue as police chief,” Brock said in a statement released by the city. “I have submitted my request out of respect for the needs of the organization in an effort to focus on my long-term health. I’m glad I was able to end my law enforcement career helping this wonderful community rebuild its police department to one they can be proud of and serves them professionally. But sometimes God has other plans.”

Brock has requested to use the balance of accumulated leave time to serve as notice of his intent to resign, city officials said.

Brock, the chief since July 2019, came to Watkinsville from St. Mary’s, Georgia, where he worked for 20 years and was an acting police chief.

Deputy Chief Todd Tetterton has been appointed as interim chief. City officials said they have not decided when they will begin the process of hiring a new chief. Tetterton, an employee since January 2020, has 35 years of experience in law enforcement, according to the city.

City officials, in the news release, touted Brock’s tenure as chief. They noted he has upgraded technology, provided body cameras for officer, and overseen the patrol fleet. He hired the first female officer for the department and worked on improving relationships with other law enforcement agencies and participating in community events with seniors and children-related endeavors.
