Twenty-two books are on a draft list of titles to be removed from Waukee Community School District shelves before the start of 2024.

Their removal is part of the school district's response to Senate File 496 — the Iowa law passed this year that bans books with descriptions or depictions of sex acts from school libraries.

Schools don't yet have central guidance from the state on how to interpret the law. The Iowa Board of Education has until Dec. 28 to begin the rulemaking process, and beyond that deadline, there's no timeline for when schools districts will receive guidance.

In the meantime, school districts have been advised to consult with their attorneys.

Waukee school district spokesperson Kayla Choate said in an email to the Des Moines Register that some book titles on the district's draft list for removal by librarians before Jan. 1 may stay on shelves, "depending on a few answers we are still waiting on for what is implied vs. described or considered explicit, age-appropriate, etc." She said books that are removed will be stored off-site at the district's office or another building.
