Waukee Warriors win third-straight state swimming title, Lance Swanepoel named Swimmer of the Year

IOWA CITY — In the biggest event of the season, 28 boys swimming and diving teams from across the state met at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center for this season's IHSAA state swim meet.

When all was said and done, Waukee came out on top for the third straight season, racking up 304 points.

The squad was comprised of freshmen Parker Scuffham, Drew Dieke and Lathan Schwickerath, sophomore John Trosper and juniors Caleb Briggs, Hunter Davis, Jake Hamling, Klein Brock and Logan Eastman. The team also had six seniors, AJ Abram, Asher Havenhill, Cooper Rogers, James Coffey, Levi Manning and Sam Davey.

Waukee coach Dan Briggs said it was the perfect way to send off those six boys.

"You couldn't have scripted it any better," Briggs said. "We would have loved to win some more titles and achieve some other things, but we swam together as a team. We had a lot of guys step up for us who not only made it to state, but placed. It was awesome."

West Des Moines Valley came in a distant second with 214 points and Ames came in third place with 176 points.

Ankeny senior Lance Swanepoel, who won two individual titles Saturday, was named the IHSSCA Swimmer of the Year. He said receiving the honor is a humbling experience.
