WAUSAU – We are in the doldrums of Central Wisconsin winter, but that doesn’t mean local businesses have been stagnant and inactive. In fact, there is a lot of exciting business news to share.

We recently told you about the new owner of the Hiawatha Sports Bar in Wausau, wrote about a D.C. Everest High School sophomore who runs a Mosinee-based business that sells homemade candle wax melts, confirmed Crumbl Cookies plans to open a location in Rib Mountain this spring and rounded up the Wausau area’s top business stories of 2022.

In this edition of the Wausau Streetwise column, we feature a new location for a Hmong deli and the closing of a popular local coffee shop.

Asian grocery store opens standalone deli

Thao Oriental Store has opened Yummy Deli in the former Los Victor's restaurant on the corner of Merrill and North Fourth avenues in Wausau. Los Victor’s opened in the space, which also had been home to A&W restaurant, in January 2021.

The deli, which is now located at 1205 Merrill Ave., began life inside Thao Oriental Store before moving to its new location and opening late December. The deli serves hot takeout food like fried rice, stuffed chicken wings, pho, Hmong sausage and egg rolls.

Thao Oriental Store, which opened in early 2021, sells specialty Asian groceries, meats and produce. The store, which previously operated on South Third Avenue, is currently closed as it prepares to relocate to 4500 Rib Mountain Drive. There is no anticipated date for reopening yet, said Molly Her, chief of operations for the business. Watch for updates on the store's Facebook page.

Local coffee shop closes, roasters shift to online and wholesale

After five years in business, Condor Coffee Co. announced on its Facebook page Jan. 3 they were closing their coffee shop at 2703 Schofield Ave. in Weston, on the corner of Schofield Avenue and Alderson Street.

However, the company, which roasts the beans in Wausau, will continue to sell their coffee online. Condor Coffee specializes in creating single-origin and organic roasts along with several Wisconsin-themed blends.

You can also find their coffee at several local grocery and health food stores, including Wausau's Lamb's Fresh Market and Jerry's County Market, Antigo's The Green Hen Natural Living Market, and others. If you're craving a hot cup of joe instead, Ground Up Coffee Shop in Stratford uses Condor Coffee's beans in their drinks.

"We are beyond grateful for the relationships and friendships we have made with our customers at this location over the last 5 years, we hope you will continue to support our company by choosing us for your coffee needs in the future," the business wrote on its Facebook page.

A representative from the company was not immediately available for comment.
