Wausau woman lied when she said she was buying a gun for herself; days later it was used in a fatal shooting, Merrill police say

MADISON – A Wausau woman who bought a gun used days later in a fatal shooting now faces federal charges for lying to a firearms dealer at the time of the purchase, according to police.

Ashley Zastrow, 31, made a false statement in January when buying firearms from the federally licensed dealer, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. Zastrow said she was the buyer of the two guns but instead was buying them for someone else, according to the news release, which did not identify the dealer.

The Marshfield Police Department arrested Zastrow Aug. 5 in Marshfield. She was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Madison on Monday and remains in federal custody. Her trial is scheduled for Dec. 5.

One of the guns was used just days later, on Jan. 18, in a shooting that left 28-year-old Kayla M. Frank dead.

Tanner H. Graap of Merrill, also 28, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree reckless homicide in connection with Frank's death. His next court appearance is set for Sept. 1.

If convicted on the firearms charge, Zastrow faces a maximum of five years in federal prison.
