Waverly and Elmira boys hoops earn dominant wins, local scoreboard

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Elmira and Waverly boys basketball picked up big wins, on Saturday.

The STAC West leading Elmira Express and state ranked Waverly Wolverines earned dominant wins in early weekend games. The 11th ranked Wolverines rolled past Chenango Forks on senior day. Senior guard Joey Tomasso led Waverly to a 79-35 victory with a game-high 24 points. The Express picked up a 60-37 road win over Ithaca, behind 15 points from James Harris

In Section V, Dundee/Bradford outlasted Addison, 47-43. The Knights nearly erased a 14 point deficit by the 4th quarter. Addison closed the gap with critical buckets from Joshua Held and Jackson Nichols. Despite the effort, Aidan Webster would seal the win for the BraveScots at the free throw line.

On the college scene, local names made major impacts across the entire slate. In NCAA Division III, Nazareth defeated Elmira College, 82-47. Corning grad Alyssa Dobson scored 3 points and 2 assists, while Horseheads grad Madilann Johnson tallied 4 assists for the Golden Flyers. In Division II, Elmira grad Jalea Abrams recorded 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for Queens College in a 66-61 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. At the Division I level, Elmira grad Zaria Shazer led Marist with a 23 point, 10 rebound double-double. Fellow Express grad Kiara Fisher added 6 points for the Red Foxes, in the hard fought loss to Siena.
