Waverly High School senior Peyton Shaw killed, driver seriously injured in 3-car crash
A Waverly High School student and sports standout was killed and a recent Waverly graduate seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in the Tompkins County Town of Newfield.
New York State Police at Ithaca identified the victim as 17-year-old Peyton Shaw, of Waverly. Shaw was a passenger in a Toyota Yaris operated by Dale T. "Ty" Beeman, 18, of Spencer, state police said.
The crash took place around 12:50 p.m. on West Danby Road (state Route 34) near Piper Road in Newfield, according to troopers.
An investigation revealed the Toyota and a Jeep Patriot were both traveling north on West Danby Road at the time.

There will be calling hours for Shaw from 1-4 p.m. Sunday in the Waverly High School Auditorium, according to an obituary published on the Morning Times website.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Epiphany in Sayre, Pennsylvania. The burial will be held at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens after the service, according to the obituary.
How the crash occurred in Newfield
The operator of the Jeep was stopped for another vehicle in front of it making a turn when it was rear-ended by Beeman's vehicle, state police said. The Toyota then went into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Cadillac CT6.
Shaw was pronounced dead at the scene. Beeman was transported by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre for treatment of serious injuries, troopers said. He was in critical condition Wednesday morning.
The driver of the Jeep and the operator of the Cadillac were checked at the scene by emergency medical workers, but were not transported to local hospitals.

Peyton Shaw remembered by Waverly School District
Shaw, a senior at Waverly High School, was a second-team Interscholastic Athletic Conference basketball all-star last season and among leading scorers this season.
Beeman graduated from Waverly High School last year and was a football, wrestling and baseball standout.
Waverly school Superintendent Eric Knolles posted a message regarding Shaw's death Wednesday morning on the district's website.
"Peyton was a huge piece of the Waverly School District and community and her loss will impact all of us," Knolles wrote. "The district will have counseling available for students and adults alike with support from neighboring schools and the GST BOCES. We ask that you direct your prayers and support around the Shaw family."
