Waverly man sentenced for assault, terroristic threats, starting fire

BRADFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WETM) — A Waverly man was sentenced for assaulting and threatening a security officer at Robert Packer Hospital and setting a fire in Sayre last spring.

According to the Bradford County District Attorney’s Office, Brett A. Bunker, 47, was sentenced to a minimum of 22 months and a maximum of 72 months in a state prison for reckless burning (a felony), simple assault, and terroristic threats. The Sayre Borough Police Department arrested Bunker on multiple charges on May 30, 2023, after an incident at Robert Packer. The Sayre PD arrested him again in June on the reckless burning charge after investigating a fire that was set near the railroad tracks on North Thomas Avenue in Sayre Borough.

18 News previously reported that police were called to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre on May 30 after Bunker arrived at the hospital via ambulance and kept banging on the grand piano near the hospital’s entrance. Bunker said he didn’t want to be seen by doctors, and when he was asked to leave, Bunker chased a security officer.

Bunker reportedly punched the security officer in the face and head three times and threatened to burn the officer’s house down with the officer inside. Police had agreed with the security officer’s account of the incident. At the time, police also said that Bunker was a suspect in a string of arsons across the Valley.
