Wawa, with its fanatical following, is opening stores in NC. Here’s when and where

Wawa — a convenience store chain with a fanatical following — is expanding into North Carolina with eight locations.

The chain plans to open the stores in the eastern part of the state through 2024, according to an Oct. 25 announcement. Here’s where the locations will be:

  • North Croatan Highway and 4th Street in Kill Devil Hills

  • Halstead Boulevard and U.S. Highway 17 in Elizabeth City

  • Raleigh Road Parkway and Hayes Place in Wilson

  • Ward Boulevard and Nash Street in Wilson

  • Benvenue Road and Jeffreys Road in Rocky Mount

  • Wayne Memorial Drive and Hospital Road in Goldsboro

  • U.S. Highway 70 and N.C. Highway 581 in Goldsboro

  • Stantonsburg Road and Moye Boulevard in Greenville

“We can’t wait to open our doors to the community next year,” Kim Dowgielewicz, director of store operations, wrote in a news release. “As we get closer to our grand openings in 2024, we will be sharing even more details on our growth in North Carolina.”

Wawa said it didn’t have exact launch dates for the new stores. But the announcement was part of the chain’s plan to open about 80 convenience stores across Eastern North Carolina over the next decade or so.

“To build each store, Wawa will invest approximately $7 million and employ, on average, 140 contractors and local partners,” the company wrote. “Once open, each store will employ, on average, 35 associates, with Wawa expecting to create more than 2,800 new jobs as a result of its expansion.”

The full list of eight locations was announced after Wawa broke ground this spring in Kill Devil Hills, a town on the Outer Banks barrier islands, The Virginian-Pilot reported. On Oct. 25, Wawa held welcome events in Greenville and Wilson.

Wawa has almost 1,000 stores along the East Coast, with Virginia locations currently being the closest to Eastern North Carolina. Fans of the chain are often drawn to its coffee and food — including the beloved hoagies, The News & Observer reported.

The chain didn’t immediately share additional details with McClatchy News on Oct. 26.
