Wawa opens a new Boynton Beach location — and serves free coffee through July 23

Wawa is celebrating the opening of its newest gas station and convenience store in Boynton Beach with a touch of fanfare and plenty of free coffee.

The store at 9910 S. Jog Road at Boynton Beach Boulevard opened its doors for the first time on July 13, less than four months after the city welcomed another location on Woolbright Road. Ray Crespo, the general manager, led a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside Wawa customers, employees and the company mascot, Wally Goose.

While the confetti has since cleared, Wawa customers can still celebrate the new location by visiting for free coffee through July 23 — a tradition with the opening of every new store.

The rapidly expanding chain now has more than a dozen locations in Palm Beach County, including a Lantana store that opened in June, along with locations in West Palm Beach and suburban Lake Worth Beach that opened in February.

Wawa has built a dedicated fanbase around its combination stores that offer not only fuel, but also surcharge-free ATMs, free air pumps and full kitchens that serve breakfast burritos, sandwiches, salads, burgers, frozen drinks and other offerings.

Here are some other quick facts about Wawa:

  • The chain employs more than 35,000 people, including about 40 people at the new location in Boynton Beach.

  • A Wawa spokesperson said employees own 39% of the company through an employee stock ownership plan.

  • The company sells 80 million hoagies and 195 million cups of coffee every year.

  • Wawa has more than 950 convenience stores, with more than 750 offering gasoline, in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C.

  • Wawa is expanding into the Florida Panhandle in addition to locations in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

  • Why do the stores use a goose as their logo? Before it became a food retailer, the company ran a dairy farm in rural Wawa, Pa., and "Wawa," according to the company, is a Native American word for the Canada Goose that was found in the Delaware Valley more than 100 years ago.
