Wawa selects location for first Louisville store

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the number of Wawa employees. It has upwards of 35,000 workers.

A Pennsylvania-based gas station and convenience store finally decided where it will build its first Louisville location.

Wawa is putting down roots with a nearly 6,000-square-foot site in the Highview neighborhood at 7601 Vaughn Mill Rd., according to an application filed with the city. Owner Gilezan Properties LLC said the business will "allow residents and visitors options for dining and convenient access to fuel" for "one of Louisville’s rapidly developing areas."

Neither a representative from Wawa or Gilzean Properties was immediately available for comment Thursday morning regarding when the new location will open, but previous Courier Journal reporting indicates it won't be for a while. The first store is projected to launch "sometime after 2025," according to a release.

Wawa announced its expansion into Kentucky and the Midwest late last year, planning other stores in Ohio and Indiana.

The chain already has a large presence in the Northeast with more than 950 stores that employ upwards of 35,000 people in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C., the store's website said.

Wawa is known for its fresh-food options, which include its in-house brand and "built-to-order hoagies," coffee, breakfast sandwiches, drinks with soups, sides and snacks, the site said.
