There’s a new way to get online SLO Superior Court case records. Here’s how it works

The San Luis Obispo Superior Court has released a new online case search system that makes documents more easily accessible to the public, the court announced in a news release Tuesday.

The court began looking into creating online case search two years ago after it was notified by a Tribune reporter that it was not keeping public records in line with California law.

According to the California Rules of Court, courts that keep public records electronically must also have a searchable online case system that is free for the public to access. Dockets for both criminal and civil cases must be available online and civil case records must be available online.

For years, the court had a private computer accessible only to a select few to look up records at the courthouse.

When the Tribune alerted the discrepancy in January 2022, the court placed a public computer on the third floor that allowed the public to search records while it worked on a larger solution to bring its record keeping in line with the law.

On Jan. 4, the court piloted the new system, called re:SearchCA.

“The court is excited to provide this modern, more efficient way to access court records,” the release said.

San Luis Obispo County is the first county in California to introduce this case search platform, according to the release. It created the platform in partnership with Tyler Technologies.

How to access the online case search

The online case search is available on the court’s homepage under “Online Case Lookup.”

From there, click on “re:SearchCA,” which is the second button on the page. That button will take you to the re:SearchCA homepage.

For security purposes, anyone that uses the platform must register for an account by clicking the “Register” button in the top right corner of the page.

Once you are registered, you can search any case by attorney information, party information, case number or judge.

Civil court case documents are downloadable from the website, but you will only be able to access criminal court documents at the public computer at the courthouse.

For both criminal and civil cases, you will be able to see the latest case information and actions.
