WAYLAYING WAYLAND: OKWU wrestlers wrangle out win

Perhaps their performance earlier this week in a dual match could have earned the Oklahoma Wesleyan University wrestling team the nickname of the Samson Crew.

The Eagles — who are coached by Thomas Carr — were simply unbeatable on the mat in a 36-6 mauling of Wayland Baptist (Texas).

OKWU hammered out six wins — two of them by falls — and they didn’t need the jawbone of a donkey.

Pinning their foes were Jake Stanton (125, 4:20) and Andrew Mahoney (157, 2:09).

The four Eagles that seized victory by decision included: Kolby Encinas (133, 8-4), Donte Lopez (141, 8-2), Chad Sakamoto (149, 10-5) and Jaden Welden (174, 3-1).

Bartlesville High graduate Carter Manley (184) added six more points on a win by forfeit.

Wayland Baptist’s Malakai Owens (165) accounted for his team’s points with a forfeit win.

Both teams forfeited at 197 and 285.

In the only exhibition match, Wayland Baptist came out on top by pin (2:40).
