Wayne County 4-H members earn State Fair awards

Wayne County 4-H members earned top awards for their projects, livestock judging and skillathons at the Ohio State Fair.

Addison Liston won Outstanding of the Day awards in two project areas, Cake Decorating, Junior, and You Can Quilt, Junior.

Other Outstanding of the Day honors went to Ruthie Finney, Party Planner, Junior; Bethany George, Get Started in Art, Junior; Sadie Hinkle, Clothes for High School and College; and Malachi Smith, The Global Gourmet.

Wayne County’s senior division livestock judging placed third earning it the right to compete in a national livestock judging contest. Team members Mason Johnson, Makenna Connelly, Carly Csapo, Ethan Gasser and Morgan Vodika will travel to Kansa City in October to compete at the American Royal Livestock Show.

Individual placings were: Mason Johnson, third overall, second in goats and eighth in beef. Carly Csapo, eighth overall and sixth in oral reasons; and Makenna Connelly, fifth in swine.

Wayne County’s junior division livestock judging team placed ninth. Members are Mallory Kendle, Mallory Johnson, Brynn Shearer, Margo Johnson and Brock Shearer.

Brynn Shearer was second overall along with fourth in swine, fifth in sheep, and eighth in goats.

Wayne County winners for in-person skillathons were: Elizabeth Howman, overall dairy skillathon winner and the 18-year-old division champion. Kelly Hawvermale was the division winner for 15-year-olds.

Mason Johnson was the age division champion for 16-year-olds in sheep and Riley Stull was the age division champion for 18-year-olds in swine.

Other age division winners were:

Beef – Chase Wharton, second in 10-year-olds; Owen Bailey, second in 12-year-olds; Carly Csapo, fourth in 17-year-olds; and Kendra Marty, second in 18-year-olds.

Goat – Mallory Johnson, seventh in 11-year-olds; Avery Keplar, eighth in 11-year-olds; and Mason Johnson, second in 16-year-olds.

Grace Hulse, was second among 11-year-olds in the horse skillathon and Kaitlyn Carr was third among age 13-year-olds in the swine skillathon.

Wayne County 4-H’ers placing in the top 25 in virtual skillathons were:

Dairy – Matthew Taylor, ninth overall and second in the 16-year-old category.

Goat – Margo Johnson, fourth in 8-year-olds and 9-year-olds; Mallory Johnson, third in 11-year-olds and Mason Johnson, fifth in 16-year-olds.

Alpaca and Llama – Mason Johnson, fifth in 16-year-olds

Sheep – Margo Johnson, 22nd overall and fifth in 8-year-olds and 9-year-olds; Mallory Johnson, 25th overall and fifth place in 11-year-olds and Mason Johnson, eighth in age 16-year-olds.
