Wayne County bicyclist fatally injured in U.S. 27 collision

RICHMOND, Ind. — A Wayne County man was fatally injured Wednesday when his bicycle collided with a Chevrolet Avalanche.

Dean Dunaway, 56, of Fountain City, was pronounced dead after being flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

The fatal collision took place on U.S. 27 south of Whitewater Road, according to a release issued by the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators said Dunaway was riding his bicycle southbound on the shoulder of the federal highway when he turned into the path of the Avalanche, also southbound, as it passed him.

The driver of the Avalanche was not injured but was taken to Reid Hospital for a blood draw, standard procedure after a traffic accident involving serious injury or death.

U.S. 27 was closed in the wake of the collision, but reopened to traffic at 4:25 p.m.

In addition to sheriff's deputies, personnel from Reid Hospital EMS and Fountain City Fire/Rescue responded to the scene.
