Wayne County commissioners accept grants to assist crime victims

The Wayne County commissioner approved applying for grants for various count projects.

At the Wednesday meeting, the Wayne County commissioners approved a resolution that accepts a grant from the Ohio Attorney General for Wayne County through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) and the State Victims Assistance Act (SVAA) for the 2024 Victim Witness Awareness Program on behalf of the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney.

The VOCA federal funds are $52,336, the state funding from the SVAA amounts to $4,856, and the local matching funds provided by the County Commissioners are equal to $44,825.43, bringing the grand total of the grant to $102,017.43. Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney Angela Wypasek notes that the funds will help to fund salary (the dollars are earmarked toward the Director's salary) and offset some of the costs of the Victim Witness Assistance Program.

Program Director Jill Cheek also notes that "the program provides services such as advocacy and support to crime victims. The services we provide mainly regard the criminal justice process, which include informing victims of the rights, social service agency referrals, and counseling services."
